A friend shared this primordial music video with me, and it encapsulated my Catholic experience as a California child of the seventies: liberal, rocking nuns and lots of music participation. I sang this version of The Lord’s Prayer in my church’s rock choir, after Sister Janet Mead scored an Australian pop hit with it.
While the Catholic Church is generally known for its uptight, shaming control of its members (I just watched it in the movie Conclave – what the hell was that ending?), my particular participation fell at a time when the Church strove to be more groovy and accessible. The ultimate expression of this was rock mass! Mass was no longer boring with bad music – the younger generation would be persuaded to practice their faith through rock!
